H i s t o r y

TIP was registered as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in August 1999 evolving from the Traditional Irrigation Improvement Program (TIP). The first phase of TIP started in 1988 with financial support from the Netherlands government.

1987 – 1988 Nationwide inventory of traditional irrigation
(SNV, TFFHC).
1988 – 1992 Phase I. Implementation starts in 5 districts (Iringa, Kilosa, Same, Mwanga, Lushoto).
Development of the TIP package:

1. Organizational Development

2. Soil and Water Conservation,
Afforestation and Land Use Planning

3. Irrigation Improvement
1992 – 1997 Phase II. Inclusion of Arumeru district (1993).
Development of gender component.
1997 – 2000 Phase III. Inclusion of Mpwapwa district (1997).
Phasing out of Southern districts (1999).
Transformation to NGO.
2000 – to date TIP is operating in 4 districts (Lushoto, Same, Mwanga, Arumeru) and perform programs in Moshi Rural, Hai and Rombo districts.
